Formed in February 2010 by the merger of the Colombian airline Avianca and TACA Airlines from El Salvador, Avianca Holdings is the second largest airline holding company in Latin America by revenue and fleet size – only following Santiago-based LATAM Airlines Group. The company operates a fleet of 173 aircrafts and employs 19,000 people across several Latin American countries. Led by Elisa Murgas de Moreno, who is known as one of the most influential general counsel in Colombia, Avianca’s legal team is able to provide concise advice that adds clear commercial value to the company. The past two decades Murgas and her team have supported some of the most significant strategic initiatives of the company – receiving widespread praise and respect for the contribution to Avianca’s long term growth. Last year the legal team supported the purchase of the Argentinian airline MacAir, enabling Avianca to continue to boost its presence in Latin America. In 2017, the company has been involved in extensive negotiations with United Airlines to form a strategic partnership that will help it to grow internationally. The team features several prominent lawyers, such as Ana Maria Garcia Ceballos. Garcia has been in charge of Avianca’s dispute resolution since 2001, and is respected for her extensive knowledge of litigation, procedural law, reconciliation, union issues and arbitration.
