About

Having had a presence in the country since the early 20th century, the Colombian activities of international bank Citi are supported by a strongly recommended in-house legal team. From their base in Bogotá, the team is particularly known for providing first rate counsel and being a group of established legal professionals dedicated to teamwork and protecting the business of Citi in Colombia. Totalling 14 employees including several senior attorneys, the lawyers in the function are described by Francisco Baquerizo, general counsel, as being ‘client-oriented but with a very sharp criteria of risk that is input in the legal process and work’. Despite all being locally-trained Colombian lawyers, the way Citi’s company structure operates enables them to develop ‘high skills regarding New York law documentation’, displaying the enrichment of their development and the time efficiency and cost reduction they provide to the operation. Keen to build bridges between the business and key clients, the legal team has the important responsibility to support ‘the most important investment banking transactions of Colombia executed by public sector, government and private companies’. Key areas of focus for the team include establishing long-term relationships with key clients by building ‘security, stability and trust’, qualities which serve the team well in dealing with the dynamism of a large international bank and maintaining timely delivery of results without giving up quality. In terms of specific projects, Baquerizo mentions a highlight of executing a document rationalisation project – which he claims has ‘narrowed down substantially the size of the documents that contain the bank products’ – while the team was also central to ‘digitalisation of all businesses and virtual documentation poses an interesting risk from a legal perspective’.
