Led by the dynamic lawyer Juan Pablo Ovalle, IBM’s legal department in Colombia has won many plaudits for providing strategic advice to the business, generating creative and proactive solutions to the challenges that it faces. By working with engineers and commercial partners, the team has created legal processes that are faster and better suited to the commercial needs of the company. This approach has been important for the team to assist IBM’s global corporate transformation from a software and hardware business to a cloud, cognitive and service based company. Recently, the team has captured the headlines in Colombia by striking a partnership with Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer Andrés Cepeda to collaboratively compose the artist’s next single, utilising IBM’s Watson, a cloud based artificial intelligence platform. Other impressive transactional work for the team includes supporting IBM’s outsourcing deals with SURA and enterprise licensing agreements with Grupo Aval, as well as IBM’s first public contract with the Colombian government. Receiving praise from industry peers for its strong expertise in contract negotiation, corporate governance and labour issues, the team has demonstrated an ability to effectively optimise its work to maintain an exceptional legal service with limited resources.
