The five-person legal unit at Odinsa, the leading infrastructure developer in Colombia, has facilitated several key transactions that have paved the way for the company’s strategic shift away from ports and energy towards roads and airports. Key highlights include: the successful divestment of the company’s participation in certain projects across Colombia, Chile and Panamá; outstanding negotiations conducted to facilitate the completion of two road concessions in the Dominican Republic; accomplishment of the project completion of an airport concession in Ecuador; and work to close acquisitions of airport and road concessions in Ecuador and Aruba. The distinguishing factor behind the team’s recent success is its multidisciplinary approach. ‘We don’t only have people with legal knowledge of one specific area, but integral professionals’, says the team’s leader Andrea Camargo. ‘We have a civil engineer focused on environment, a lawyer with an MBA and knowledge of international law, a lawyer focused in corporate and financial law, and a lawyer with knowledge of public law. This kind of team allows us to have a global view of each of the issues that we have to attend as well as different perspectives on how to solve the problems that we face’. The team’s work to reinforce its internal prevention of risk procedures, as well as put more emphasis on Know Your Customer (KYC) processes has enabled Odinsa to develop a reputation of transparency and acting according to the law. The team features several prominent lawyers, such as director of international legal affairs Andrea Camargo and legal counsel Nicolás Sarmiento.
