The increasing dominance of e-commerce transactions means that online payment providers are an important part of the modern financial landscape. It is fundamental to the business model of online payment providers to stay as up-to-date with current financial technology and potential threats from hackers and other nefarious actors as possible, which provide unique challenges for the PayU legal team. Indeed, PayU maintains a highly trained legal presence in Colombia, which is led by general counsel Juan Francisco Schultze-Kraft. Schultze-Kraft has a long and distinguished career in corporate legal work, having previously held both legal and business positions at a number of large companies, including General Motors, and is joined in the PayU legal function by other top-level talent. Latin America legal and data privacy counsel Catherine Baena Martínez, who is a former private practice associate and in-house head of legal, is an expert in privacy matters and therefore ideally placed to lead PayU’s vital management of personal data issues. The team is in a great position to support and enable the exciting growth strategy planned by the business over the next few years. As part of this, PayU plans to establish a presence in Ecuador and many other Central American nations where they do not currently operate. This will require the legal team to display their organisational and cross-border expertise once again, a challenge which they are sure to relish.
