In the fast-evolving adtech sector, the role of an in-house counsel goes beyond legal expertise, requiring a proactive and innovative approach. My leadership approach centres on integrating legal, privacy, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into the core of our operations, and embracing new developments, like AI. This positions us to be active drivers of progress, essential for maintaining agility and foresight in a competitive landscape.

In 2023, I took on the responsibility of leading our ESG efforts and navigating the complexities of emerging ESG regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This role underscores my commitment to sustainability, aligning my professional expertise with my personal belief that businesses have a key role in fostering a sustainable future.

My approach to merging legal frameworks with business objectives is twofold: first, by identifying and eliminating legal and bureaucratic obstacles to streamline operations, and second, by cultivating a culture of trust within my team. By focusing on these areas, my team and I work closely with different business units to find solutions that align with our strategic goals. Concurrently, I have built a fantastic team founded on trust and competency, ensuring they are not only adept legally but also fully integrated into the business.

To foster enhanced collaboration, I advocate for regular, open dialogues between my team leaders and their counterparts in other departments. This initiative promotes transparent communication, positioning us as strategic partners from the outset. Such proactive engagement is key to incorporating legal, privacy, and ESG considerations into business strategies from their inception, paving a smoother path to success. For instance, we saw this proactive approach pay off in the successful development of our new ESG strategy finalised in 2023, which we are rolling out in our business in Q1, 2024 with fantastic feedback.

My leadership style and initiatives embody the essential qualities for a successful in-house counsel: a strong legal foundation, strategic business acumen, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. By promoting a culture of collaboration, trust, and forward-thinking, I am confident that my team and I are not only driving our business’s growth and resilience but also ensuring that our impact extends well beyond financial metrics.
