What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
We have been heavily involved in supporting GANNI’s growth and global expansion initiatives. This includes significant transactions in the real estate sector, where we have successfully negotiated and finalized leases for several new retail stores in key international markets, as well as supporting the business in the expansion of our franchise, license, and distribution partnerships globally.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
I believe the qualities needed for success as an in-house lawyer can vary based on the size and maturity of the business and the legal team. At GANNI, where our legal team is small and the company is in a growth phase, being a generalist is essential. This means being proficient in a variety of legal areas, including IP and brand protection, real estate, collaborations, antitrust, privacy, dispute resolution, and insurance. Additionally, having a commercial mindset and the ability to think creatively is crucial. Often, it’s not enough to simply say “no” to a proposal; instead, providing alternative solutions that align with the legal framework adds significant value to the organization. This approach fosters collaboration and supports the company’s growth and innovation.
How have you fostered a closer collaboration between the legal department and your business counterparts?
It is essential to me that the legal department is seen as a valuable sparring partner to various teams within our organization. We achieve this by actively participating in discussions, assessing risks pragmatically, and framing legal considerations as opportunities rather than obstacles. Additionally, I have made a concerted effort to make legal concepts understandable to everyone. While it may sound cliché, translating legal jargon into plain language significantly eases communication and adds substantial value to both individuals and the business. This approach helps integrate the legal department more seamlessly into the broader business strategy, fostering a closer and more effective collaboration.
