Can you give an idea of the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
The legal team has been an integral part of Equinor’s acquisition of BeGreen during the first quarter of 2023 and the implementation thereof. The legal team has worked tirelessly to ensure that the transaction was executed and implemented timely, in compliance with all relevant legal requirements, while at the same time ensuring legal support to BeGreen’s day-to-day operations.
If you had to give advice to an aspiring in-house lawyer or general counsel, what would it be and why?
Prioritise developing a deep understanding of the company’s business and the industry. Working in-house entails that you will be working closely with various stakeholders in different parts of the company with the ultimate goal of assisting them in making the best decisions taking the legal environment into consideration. To do this, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the company’s business and industry — from both a financial and an operational aspect.
The unusual business environment created by the pandemic has been swiftly followed by the Ukraine crisis, and attendant supply chain costs rising and rising inflation. Are you now putting more emphasis on preparing for the unforeseen and, if so, what does this entail?
The allocation of risk to counterparties has come under increased scrutiny. While counterparty risks have long been recognised as a critical concern, the current economic climate has underscored the importance of evaluating the counterparty’s ability to bear these risks. It is imperative to assess whether the counterparty possesses the necessary capacity and resources to navigate these challenges and, in the end, honour their commitments.
