BMS Heavy Cranes

Focus on: Our company

Over the last decade BMS Heavy Cranes have been providing engineered solutions to heavy lifting challenges on a global scale. BMS Heavy Cranes has a unique network of specialists within our field and has developed into one of the world’s leading heavy lifting companies. The company’s headquarters are located in Noerresundby, Denmark, but we have 45+ branch offices/depots worldwide and we are involved in projects in most parts of the world. We take part in projects both on- and offshore and in other industries and we are constantly seeking to expand across various industries and sectors.

From a legal perspective, the in-house team at BMS Heavy Cranes operate within a great variety of legal topics such as contracts, compliance, insurance, corporate, HR and global mobility. The team consists of the Chief Legal & HR Officer and five employees with legal backgrounds who all have different key competencies covering most aspects of the business.

Over the last couple of years, we have been experiencing the increased focus on climate and sustainability firsthand as well as from our customers, which has entailed a natural need to increase our focus on these topics. It is a core value of BMS Heavy Cranes that we are always seeking to increase our sustainability in everything we do, which transfers into the tasks of the legal team and the need for updated policies and alignment with requirements and international standards.

As one of the global leaders in our industry, we are highly dependent on a strong contractual foundation for our projects and it is furthermore important to ensure that the wide range of ongoing contracts are being managed in a legally sound and efficient manner. These tasks are also covered by our in-house team, who have strong internal relations to our project- and sales departments and in order to ensure alignment between the practical and the legal matters. In order to ensure that we have the necessary resources to execute our projects, the legal team also covers the legal topics related to employing, deploying or relocating employees globally (both white- and blue collar) as well as the compliance- and tax related matters related hereto. It should therefore be noted that the essence of a well-functioning and value-adding in-house legal team in a project-organisation lies within ability to ensure that the legal team is seen as a part of the projects and not as an external organisation within the company.

As most other in-house legal teams, we have been experiencing the consequences of both the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis over the last years, which has indeed entailed the need to address the unforeseen factors that may impact a company when operating on a global scale. From a legal perspective it has become increasingly important to highlight and assess unforeseen factors contractually on a project during the negotiation of the contract and to ensure that mitigation measures are in place in the event that something unexpected occurs.
