Eliaser Durán Tejeda
Vice president of specialised legal services and corporate governance | Banco Múltiple BHD
Team Size: Seven
First, can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently?
Our team is responsible for drafting and reviewing all contracts with the bank’s service providers. Currently we provide support with the review of contracts of high technical complexity and crucial relevance in operations due to the different initiatives involved in the Bank’s digital transformation. We are also responsible for addressing issues such as cybersecurity, protection of personal data and other risks associated with the use of technology. Our team also provides support on intellectual property issues, and I personally advise on corporate governance issues. In addition, we provide legal support in transactions or operations at the level of the Bank’s holding company, Centro Financiero BHD, which allows us to work on special projects that require a level of depth in corporate and business issues, as well as a willingness to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams of the Bank itself, providing timely advice on projects and mitigating any legal risk involved.
How do you stay up-to-date with changes in laws and regulations relevant to your organisation’s industry?
We do this through various channels, internally, we constantly monitor the regulations and laws that impact not only the bank, but also the markets in which the financial group’s companies operate, such as the securities market. In addition, within our consultancy, the different departments prepare executive summaries of the laws that impact our sector, which are regularly disseminated, and we also receive the latest legislative developments through domestic associations such as the Dominican Banking Association and international ones through subscriptions such as Law Insider, The Harvard Law School Corporate Governance Forum, among other leading legal publications.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
A cause that I am very concerned with are the biases faced by female leadership in senior management positions. I understand that this issue is not given the visibility and analysis it requires, so that we can seek a solution to the disproportionate burden of unpaid work that women carry out, often placing them in situations of chronic stress and limiting their professional development and allowing them to reach their full potential. We must continue to promote flexible working schemes that allow us to take advantage of the qualities of remote work and the use of communication tools in the legal profession in order to bring us closer to a possible work-life balance.
