How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

During crises, my team manages legal aspects by proactively assessing risks and developing contingency plans. We ensure clear communication between legal and other departments involved. We stay informed about regulatory changes and maintain compliance. We work hand in hand with the company’s crisis management team in order to align with the business strategy and use flexible policies and quick decision-making to adapt to changing circumstances. After the crisis, review the response to identify improvements for future preparedness.

What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?

In the past year, we have been working with the manufacturing industry regulations and incentives, including a transaction where the company acquired the largest pork plant in the country. We also handled the purchase of two stores from a market competitor, as well as other real estate and corporate operations due to the group’s expansion.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

Our company has seamlessly integrated sustainability into its operations through several key initiatives. We prioritise operational efficiency by implementing energy-saving technologies and waste reduction strategies. Additionally, we’re investing in renewable energy projects, including installing solar panels at each of our retail stores. In sourcing, we prioritise suppliers with strong sustainability practices and ethical standards. Our commitment to sustainability extends to product innovation, where we develop eco-friendly products and utilise recyclable packaging.

The role of the general counsel is pivotal in driving these initiatives forward. Our legal team meticulously reviews environmental regulations, develops compliance strategies, oversees sustainability reporting, and manages associated risks. They ensure that our sustainability practices align with legal requirements while promoting a culture of environmental responsibility throughout our business operations.

In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently?

In my opinion, the Dominican Republic’s main trends are tourism, manuafacturing expansion, digital government services and political stability and fiscal reforms. Post-pandemic recovery has been managed exceptionally well, with significant investments in infrastructure and promotion. The manufacturing sectors, especially within free trade zones, are expanding, driving exports. There is also an increased focus on enhancing digital government services to improve efficiency. Investments in renewable energy projects and major transportation initiatives, including ports, are on the rise. Recent elections saw the governing party re-elected, paving the way for fiscal reforms aimed at increasing revenue and ensuring fiscal sustainability.
