How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Based on the experiences gained from past crisis situations, the understanding of  the regulatory landscape and anticipating changes that might arise, I outline strategies to follow before they occur so that their effects are minimised,  but when they result in potential legal liability, we establish a crisis response team that includes prestigious external law firm, who can provide immediate advice and support.

By integrating these legal strategies with the broader business strategy, organisations can enhance their resilience. This involves aligning legal risk management with business continuity plans, ensuring that legal considerations are part of the strategic decision-making process. The goal is to protect the organisation’s interests while maintaining operational stability and adaptability during and after the crisis.

What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?

Sustainability is a fundamental component of AES’s business strategy, integrated into our core operations through strategic alignment with business objectives and rigorous governance oversight. We set ambitious sustainability targets and regularly review our progress to ensure accountability and transparency to stakeholders.

Within AES, my role involves overseeing the legal and governmental aspects of our sustainability initiatives. This includes ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, managing legal risks associated with sustainability practices, and advocating for supportive regulatory frameworks. We engage with stakeholders to communicate our sustainability commitments and gather feedback that informs our strategies and policies.

Our approach includes investing in innovative technologies like renewable energy projects and energy efficiency initiatives, which contribute to our sustainability goals while requiring legal expertise to navigate regulatory landscapes and secure necessary approvals.

What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?

Emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and the legal tech platforms are revolutionising the legal professions. AI streamlines legal research and contract analysis, while blockchain ensures secure transactions with smart contracts and LT platforms automate documents management and e-discovery, enhancing efficiency. AES corporation, as my parent company, keeps me updated through talks talks and webinars almost weekly.
