Lauren Vargas
Corporate legal manager | Pasteurizadora Rica (Grupo Rica)
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Our legal department is integral from the outset in developing contingency plans and actively participates in the crisis management team. This involvement ensures that risk mitigation measures comply with legal requirements. We focus on identifying potential legal risks early and crafting comprehensive action plans that align with our business goals.
What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
A notable recent achievement was securing the declaration of a well-known trademark from the National Office of Industrial Property (ONAPI). This status, marking us as the first Dominican brand recognised as well-known in multiple classes, provides extended protection and strengthens our legal position, safeguarding against unauthorised use and enhancing our competitive edge.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Grupo Rica actively champions sustainability through various projects impacting sustainable development goals. Our legal department ensures compliance with national and international sustainability regulations. This commitment is central to our corporate responsibility and aligns with our strategy for long-term growth and resilience.
In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently (these can be legal, political, economy or business-based)?
In the Dominican Republic, sustainability and artificial intelligence (AI) are key trends. Companies are increasingly required to adopt sustainable practices, challenging legal departments to stay updated with evolving regulations. Additionally, the rapid adoption of AI outpaces regulatory development, presenting challenges for ensuring responsible and ethical use of technology. At Grupo Rica, we proactively address these issues to align with emerging standards and best practices.
