How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
At PMI, we are in the midst of an extraordinary transformation. Our company is shifting its business model towards a singular goal: delivering a smoke-free future. This significant change brings both challenges and opportunities. The company’s current objective is to discontinue the sale of cigarettes and, in turn, expand its portfolio to include reduced-risk products such as heated tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and nicotine products.
In my role, this objective is central to all the strategies and actions I develop. The work I do supports the company’s core commercial objectives. A key element of my role involves selling ideas, which is often more challenging than marketing the products themselves. My responsibilities span multiple functions across the organisation, requiring me to manage a portfolio of political and policy strategies at the state level. My work is also highly collaborative, involving close coordination with internal business, public relations, political affairs, and legal teams to ensure our business priorities align with public policy goals.
What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
My contributions to the business are multifaceted, and I play a vital role in advocating for the company’s goals on a daily basis. I regularly engage with political, bureaucratic, and industry stakeholders, as well as other influential opinion leaders, to build alliances that support tobacco harm reduction. These efforts are crucial in fostering a favourable environment for the company’s initiatives in the Dominican Republic.
In addition, I provide continuous support to our regulatory affairs initiatives, which includes keeping the regulatory dossier for the tobacco industry up to date. Another important aspect of my work involves developing a deep understanding of tax and regulatory legislation, staying ahead of emerging issues and industry trends, and navigating the political dynamics that influence our business. This ensures that our company’s key initiatives remain aligned with both internal strategies and external political stakeholders.
In supporting various departments within the company, I have also been involved in the successful launch of new products and the expansion of our portfolio. This year, we introduced several new brands, including Zyn, VEEV, and IQOS Iluma. However, specific details regarding completed or ongoing projects cannot be shared due to internal confidentiality policies.
What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?
As a manager in the field of external affairs, I have observed how emerging technologies are reshaping the legal profession. AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT and Co-Pilot, both of which are approved by our company, are transforming the way legal research is conducted, contracts are analysed, and client communication is managed. These technologies significantly enhance efficiency, accuracy, and responsiveness. It is essential to continually explore these tools and integrate them into our workflows.
To stay informed about these technological developments, I actively monitor legal technology trends, attend industry conferences, and collaborate with experts in the field. Additionally, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations are becoming increasingly integral to our work. Technology plays a key role in helping us track sustainability metrics, assess risks, and engage with stakeholders more effectively.
For me, the key to embracing these technologies is finding a balance between leveraging innovation and maintaining a personal, human approach. As a manager, I encourage my team to remain adaptive, incorporate external expertise, and be proactive in preparing for the future.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Philip Morris International has made substantial efforts to integrate sustainability into its core business operations. Our sustainability strategy is built around several key principles. The company is committed to transforming its business by replacing cigarettes with better alternatives, with a strong focus on smoke-free products. We strive to drive operational excellence by optimising our processes across the entire value chain, from tobacco farmers to consumers.
Managing our social impact is another critical component of our approach, as we seek to address sustainability challenges while creating value for society. A purposeful phase-out of cigarettes is central to this strategy, with a firm commitment to maximising the benefits of our smoke-free products. Additionally, we foster an inclusive workplace where employees are empowered and encouraged to contribute.
In Dominican Republic, I work with an exceptional team to develop programmes that support these sustainability objectives. I oversee initiatives aimed at the proper disposal of all our products, including cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and heated tobacco products. We are also developing strategies in collaboration with local businesses, the so-called ‘colmados’ for the responsible disposal of cigarette butts. Moreover, our efforts to support the environment include regular clean-up and reforestation activities.
