Ralvin Gross
Legal director | Casa Brugal
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
The legal team is very aligned with the broader business strategy. We aim to support the business through excellence in delivering focused solutions which enable the business growth. To achieve this, we prioritise and build capabilities in high growth markets and provide strategic project support to different business areas globally. In terms of risk management and business protection, we make sure that we are always horizon scanning for emerging risks and regulation – to remain one step ahead and prepare for changes that might impact the industry.
During periods of instability or crises it is paramount that the team focuses on what really matters, on what makes a difference. In some instances, it is critical to simplify processes to respond to new realities and adapt at pace (legal and business wise).
What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
Our team played an instrumental role in securing a bottling agreement with Grupo Estévez. With this new arrangement, Brugal Añejo will now be bottled in Spain. Being closer to the market guarantees a more agile and efficient process for market supply. Also, by having a different production site Brugal is mitigating the risks inherent to the Dominican Republic, while at the same time, freeing up the production capacity and enabling the focus on production of premium products. Due to the significant reduction of raw materials transportation, this agreement will also contribute to the reduction of our carbon footprint.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Sustainability is deeply embedded into Casa Brugal’s strategy and vision. In terms of carbon emissions, we are aiming to transition to 98% green energy by 2030 and become Net Zero by 2045. Water is also a key focus for Casa Brugal, and we have set an ambitious target of replenishing 100% of water consumption from production sites in water stressed areas by 2030.
The legal team has aligned its strategy in order to ensure that the sustainability team is able to deliver its vision. We seek to have early involvement and engagement with the sustainability team on relevant issues, as we believe this is vital to ensure we can provide the best advice and legal protection to our sustainability initiatives.
