How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During periods of instability or crises, the legal team’s approach is based on proactivity, flexibility, and anticipation of potential legal challenges that may arise.
To align legal strategy with the broader business strategy and ensure the organisation’s resilience, the legal team takes a number of measures. We: maintain ongoing monitoring of the legal and regulatory environment to identify changes, trends, or potential risks that may impact the company; work closely with executive and operational teams to understand the company’s business and operational needs; develop legal contingency plans to address potential crises or situations of instability; and ensure that employees understand the importance of complying with applicable laws and regulations.
What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?
Punta Catalina is the country’s largest electricity generation company, contributing the most energy to the national electrical system. As the in-house legal team of Punta Catalina, we are strategic partners to the company, offering legal expertise and guidance to support its operations, and responsible of day to day legal affairs.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Among others, the company has integrated sustainability by prioritising renewable energy sources like our upcoming solar park for self-sufficiency. As general counsel, I must ensure legal compliance with environmental regulations, and help align the company’s operations with sustainable goals.
What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?
Some of the key emerging technologies to have a significant impact on the legal profession include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Legal Tech Platforms, and Data Analytics. They have the potential to revolutionise how legal contracts are executed, as well as streamline legal research, contract analysis, due diligence, document automation and predictive analytics, enabling lawyers to work more efficiently and make data-driven decisions.
To stay updated on these developments I participate in legal tech seminars and webinars, which allows me to join groups to exchange ideas, insights, and best practices with peers.
