At KCB Group, Bonnie Okumu serves as the group general counsel.
She started off as head, legal services in 2014 and has worked her way
up the ranks, becoming director, legal services in July 2018 and finally
to her current position (which includes membership on the group
executive committee). She is tasked with ensuring general corporate
governance compliance by the company and, more importantly,
providing legal and commercial solutions grounded on smart and
creative legal strategy. She is in charge of all company secretarial,
commercial advisory, regulatory affairs, contract negotiations and
preparation, securities perfection, legal risk and compliance and
dispute resolution. Highlighted as a master in her field of expertise and profiled as an innovative leader in the Business Daily Top 40 under 40 in 2021, Bonnie has a wealth of experience in corporate governance, regulatory andlegal advisory, corporate and commercial law, and dispute resolution from her over two decades-long career in the legal field in both private practice and corporate settings. She carries a special mix of transactional experience in at least 20 countries in Africa and an understanding of international business. She has handled the acquisition, formation, and reorganization of legal entities in many jurisdictions, as well as the effective resolution of substantial business disputes, and she has advised clients on tax and legal issues. She has worked as a certified secretary for several companies and as an advisor to boards, giving her expertise in corporate governance.
Before joining KCB, Bonnie worked as the chief legal and regulatory affairs officer and company secretary at Telkom Kenya (formerly Orange Kenya). She had previously served as Unilever Kenya
Limited’s general counsel and company secretary, a position in which she was responsible for the legal and secretarial affairs of nine operating companies across seven East and Southern African countries. Prior to her time at Unilever, she was Nestle’s regional legal manager for the Equatorial African Region, where she
oversaw the establishment of the company’s legal department and the supervision of a team of lawyers providing legal and tax advisory services to 14 operating companies across 20 nations. She had prior
experience working as a member of the dispute resolution team at DentonsHHM.
She is a Certified Secretary (CS) and an Advocate of the High Court.
Bonnie has served as a director at the Busara Centre for Behavioural Economics, a research and advisory firm with five locations in Asia and Africa that helps public and private sectors with their work by
advancing and applying behavioural science.
