What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
Over the past year, our legal team has been deeply involved in several significant cases and transactions. Additionally, I chair the Legal Committee of the Uganda Bankers Association, where I am involved in shaping the banking regulatory landscape in Uganda. We have held meetings with Commercial Court Judges and Uganda Revenue Authority Judges in a bid to clear case backlogs for the banking industry. We have also held meetings with the Inspector General of Government to carve out areas of collaboration to reduce corruption in Uganda.
Which recent political, economic or regulatory changes have impacted your work the most in recent years?
The recent regulatory changes in the financial sector, particularly the amendments to the Financial Institutions Act and the introduction of more stringent Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations, have significantly impacted our work. We have had to enhance our compliance frameworks and conduct extensive training for our Board and staff to ensure adherence to these new regulations. The economic fluctuations have also necessitated a more robust risk management strategy to mitigate potential impacts on our operations.
Are there any causes, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am particularly passionate about promoting good corporate governance and sustainability in the banking sector. As a Corporate Governance Practitioner, I am dedicated to implementing best practices that enhance transparency and accountability. Furthermore, I advocate for the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in our operations, aiming to create a positive impact on the community and environment.
