What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

I designed and delivered the 2022 EABL Legal Symposium held in Nairobi National Park to celebrate 100 years of EABL. Under the theme ‘The Great Reflection’. We assembled a distinguished panel of speakers and delivered a unique legal conference in the wild. This event was attended by over 2,200 lawyers and was graced by Diageo general counsel, Tom Shropshire, and the president of the Law Society of Kenya, among others.

Engaging in litigation and negotiations with tax authorities over disputes related to excise duties and corporate taxes. These cases have significant financial implications and require intricate legal strategies.

Drafting and negotiating contracts with suppliers and distributors to optimise our supply chain and distribution network. These agreements are essential for maintaining a steady flow of raw materials and ensuring efficient product distribution.

We have been involved in several high-profile intellectual property disputes to protect our brand and trademarks. This includes defending against counterfeit products and unauthorised use of our branding.

Which recent political, economic or regulatory changes have impacted your work the most in recent years?

Variations in economic growth rates across East African countries influence consumer spending and demand for our products. Economic slowdowns or booms require strategic adjustments in marketing, pricing, and product offerings.

High inflation rates have impacted the cost of production and operational expenses, necessitating careful financial planning and cost management strategies.

Shifts in government policies, especially those related to trade, taxation, and foreign investments, have a direct impact on our operations. For instance, changes in trade relations within the East African Community (EAC) can influence our supply chain and market access.

Are there any causes, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?

I have a deep passion for people and culture, with a particular focus on engaging with younger generations such as GenZs and Gen Alphas. I love helping them improve themselves and their careers, giving them a positive outlook on life.

I am passionate about sustainability in business and the environment. At East African Breweries, we integrate sustainable practices into our operations. Here are some key areas where this passion is reflected: Supporting local communities — during the EABL legal community service week, our legal team engages with local communities to promote sustainable development. We invest in projects that improve the well-being of the communities we serve; promoting responsible drinking —we run awareness campaigns and initiatives to educate consumers about responsible drinking, emphasising moderation and the risks of excessive alcohol consumption; waste management — through project Rudisha, we implement strategies to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste from our operations. We aim to achieve zero waste by improving our waste segregation and recycling processes. My commitment to sustainability helps us positively impact the environment and society while ensuring the long-term success of East African Breweries.
