What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL) is expanding its electricity business coverage both nationally and regionally, and partnering with independent power producers (IPPs) has been the most effective strategy to achieve this goal. However, despite the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19, our company was among the most affected locally. The significant challenges faced by our legal team included changes in the law and force majeure disputes impacting almost all IPPs and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects. Additionally, the international accords aimed at reducing carbon emissions have had a substantial effect on energy companies. Compliance with these agreements necessitates a shift toward renewable energy sources and a reduction in reliance on fossil fuels. Our recent transactions are aligned with this objective. The company also aims to become a technological leader, making IP protection a key focus for our legal team in these transactions.
Which recent political, economic or regulatory changes have impacted your work the most in recent years?
Rwanda has introduced stricter environmental regulations to promote sustainability, including bans on plastic bags and policies to encourage green energy solutions. These changes have influenced business operations and spurred investment in green technologies.
Are there any causes, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
The company is passionate about developing advanced grid infrastructure and energy storage solutions to improve the reliability and resilience of the power supply, integrate renewable energy sources, and optimise energy use. Having achieved access for more than 75% of the population, we plan to expand access to reliable and affordable electricity to 100% in underserved regions of the country. This expansion can improve quality of life, support economic development, and enhance education and healthcare services.
