What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
We have recently been at the helm of defending Watu’s legal compliance position before Kenya’s Parliamentary Committee on Finance and National Planning. By providing a clear understanding of Watu Credit Limited’s mission, customer journey and success initiatives, legal and regulatory challenges, and recommendations, we aim to build and sustain the delivery of unique value to its customers and the country.
Furthermore, the legal team has expertly taken over insurance litigation in-house, driving value in third-party claims where none was previously found. This has been achieved through applying expert litigation tactics that have seen the company being exonerated from the majority of third-party claims against it by making carefully drafted submissions in court that highlight the company’s role in any third-party accident claim.
Lastly, the legal department, under my initiative, has embarked on an in-house training project. The entire workforce has already been trained on data privacy compliance and labor laws affecting both the employer and the employee. This quarter, the legal department will start targeted training covering Insurance Law and Consumer Protection Law. Our objective as a department is to uphold compliance within and outside the organisation by introducing legal and regulatory compliance as one of the wheels driving the company toward achieving its goals.
Which recent political, economic or regulatory changes have impacted your work the most in recent years?
Kenya’s Data Protection Act and Regulations, which have introduced data protection safeguards for the privacy and security of personal data, have positively impacted my work in recent years. Given that personal data processing is at the core of our business, I have ensured that the company continuously complies with data handling practices, including obtaining consent for data processing and implementing adequate security measures. These regulations have prompted us to train vigorously and monitor data processing practices within the organisation while effectively responding to audit queries from regulators in Kenya.
Are there any causes, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
I am passionate about acquiring knowledge and sharing it in structured training and providing advisory services. Keeping my quest for knowledge alive is essential for both my day-to-day work and my intellectual development. I have amassed a wealth of knowledge by setting goals, reading, taking general and specialised courses, training, and networking. Law is a dynamic field, and my commitment to excel in my duties has driven me to remain curious, continually seeking to learn more so that I can share more, so that I can share and ensure knowledge exchange within my circle of influence.
