What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
In this past year, I have been involved in the M&A transaction in which Liberty Mutual sold their operations in Latin America. In this case, I was part of the due diligence process and also, I am part of the work forms to create the structure of the company.
How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?
In 2022, with the M&A transaction and considering the reduction of the team, the external lawyers were an important source that supported me in the biggest cases.
When working with an external lawyer, we review their expertise, but also, what are the recognition and the practices that they have in the market. Liberty Seguros as a multinational company is always focused on the ethics and compliance process, so every contractor must comply with our policies. So, for the company and for me, the values of the external lawyers have to be the same as our internal policies.
Our ethics and the values are not something that we negotiate.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?
The in-house lawyers always have the possibility to support their organisation but also to contribute to the business.
We can be integral support to the company, validating possibilities, verifying risks, and giving our recommendations. We have to be advisors, and not only litigators.
What diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives have you and your legal department been championing within your company’s endeavours?
This year, we collaborated closely with the compliance team to launch our first sustainability report for Ecuador and the Andes Market. This marked a significant milestone in the development of our diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, enabling us not only to work on these initiatives but also to generate measurable success through various employee-focused campaigns and successful cases.
