What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?
Over the past year, I’ve helped formalise PayJoy Ecuador within the fintech ecosystem, strengthening our legal and compliance framework to align with regulations. I developed a risk prevention process with due diligence, internal controls, and mitigation strategies to support sustainable growth. I also worked on key agreements to facilitate expansion and navigate regulatory challenges.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Ecuador’s security crisis has increased mobile phone thefts, impacting our customers and creating financial risks for us. To address this, we have worked with operations commercial teams and strategic partners to develop a comprehensive theft guarantee program. This program allows customers to replace stolen devices under certain conditions, which I was instrumental in structuring. This initiative not only minimised risks but also strengthened customer trust and reinforced PayJoy’s commitment to responsible financial services.
What are the most essential attributes of a modern in-house counsel?
Today’s businesses operate much faster than ever, and a successful in-house lawyer must understand the law and the company’s operations, adapt to its speed, and anticipate its future needs. This understanding allows us to provide tailored legal solutions that support the company’s growth and innovation.
In the fintech industry, the role of an in-house lawyer demands a deep understanding of technology and finance. Given the rapid evolution of technology, we must stay ahead of industry changes, anticipate risks, and design legal frameworks that foster innovation. The essence of being an in-house lawyer lies in adaptability, strategic thinking, and always being a step ahead.
What is a cause or business you are passionate about?
I am passionate about inclusion and creating workplaces where women and professionals from all backgrounds can thrive. Having experienced toxic work environments in previous jobs and now working in an amazing and supportive workplace, I’ve seen firsthand how a company’s culture can shape someone’s career—either by opening doors or creating unnecessary barriers.
At PayJoy, I’ve had the privilege to drive real change, working with my team to implement policies that prevent harassment, promote inclusion, and ensure an equitable work environment. Unlike many places where these discussions remain theoretical, I’ve found the support and openness to turn these ideas into concrete actions. This experience has only fueled my motivation to continue fostering a culture where everyone, regardless of gender or background, can grow, feel valued, and succeed without compromising their well-being.
