Career Biography
Lawyer with a master’s degree in business administration. He serves as Vice President of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Reybanpac, Ecuador’s largest banana producer and second-largest exporter, with more than 6,400 employees. He also holds the position of secretary of the corporate board of Favorita Fruit, holding company comprising other agribusiness units.
He has 12 years of experience in corporate affairs management, with in-depth knowledge of legal and regulatory matters, corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility.
He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ecuadorian Dairy Industry Center and actively participates on the boards of numerous Ecuadorian associations, such as the Ecuadorian Banana Cluster, the Ecuadorian Banana Exporters Association (AEBE), the Ecuadorian Association of Private Port Terminals, and chambers of industry and commerce.
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
In an uncertain environment we had been working to provide proactive legal advisory. With a clear understanding of the strategic vision and the corporation’s objectives, we collaborate for its development and obtention. To this end, we are in direct contact with our business units’ operations; this allows the legal team to fully understand what the corporation is doing as well as its needs. We also maintain effective relationships with the various stakeholders in our value chain.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organizations?
The legal team belongs to the corporation and therefore acts in defense of legal issues as if they were its own. The team achieves an understanding of the business and develops a deep sense of ownership. At the same time, the team is firmly committed to the organization’s values and sustainable development goals and acts accordingly.
As we live in a fast-paced world today, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?
It requires constant study and updating. In addition, it requires being open to participating in collaborative spaces, which includes the interaction with diverse internal and external stakeholders to strengthen the business and advance its strategic vision, as well as identifying and mitigating risks to foresee and protect the future.
