What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?
Over the past year, at LG Electronics in Ecuador, we have actively worked on developing and implementing policies that reinforce our commitment to gender equity, non-discrimination, and the creation of a safe and respectful work environment for all our employees. These efforts reflect our vision of building a fairer, more ethical company that is dedicated to the well-being of our workforce.
One of our most significant achievements has been strengthening gender equity policies. We have ensured that all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or expression, have equal opportunities for growth within the company. To achieve this, we reviewed our recruitment, promotion, and training processes to ensure they are fair and free from bias. Additionally, we launched initiatives aimed at increasing the participation of women in leadership roles, fostering greater diversity in decision-making and corporate culture.
Another key focus has been our fight against all forms of discrimination. We reinforced our principles of inclusion and respect, promoting an environment where diversity is valued, and discriminatory behaviours are eliminated. To support this, we developed awareness campaigns, internal training programmes, and effective reporting mechanisms, ensuring that our employees feel protected and supported.
Furthermore, we aligned our workplace harassment protocols with the matrices required by the Ministry of Labour, ensuring compliance with national regulations and best practices. We understand that a safe work environment is essential for the well-being and productivity of our teams. Therefore, we implemented fair, confidential, and effective procedures for handling harassment cases. We also promoted training and awareness programmes on the importance of respect in the workplace, reinforcing a zero-tolerance culture toward any form of violence or intimidation.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
During periods of instability or crisis, we understand that difficult moments provide valuable lessons that we must embrace both as a legal department and as a company. These situations force us to reinvent ourselves, adapting our strategies and strengthening our processes to ensure the organisation’s resilience.
At these times, it is essential to analyse mistakes, identify opportunities for improvement, and act quickly, always within the applicable legal framework. We focus on reviewing our policies, contracts, and regulations to ensure compliance and minimise risks.
Moreover, crises drive us to modernise and optimise our processes, incorporating technological tools that enhance efficiency and enable us to react swiftly. From automating legal processes to using artificial intelligence for risk analysis, we aim to turn challenges into opportunities for innovation.
Teamwork and communication with other business areas are crucial for making informed and strategic decisions. By approaching crises with a mindset of learning and adaptation, we not only protect the organisation but also strengthen it for the future.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
A modern in-house counsel must be prepared to adapt to constant regulatory and technological changes, ensuring the company operates both safely and efficiently. Beyond legal knowledge, it is essential to possess a strategic and problem-solving mindset, seeking solutions that not only protect the organisation but also drive it forward. Close communication and teamwork with other departments are crucial for aligning legal and business goals. Additionally, leveraging technology and data analysis helps optimise processes and improve decision-making. In a dynamic environment, the key is to be agile, proactive, and always one step ahead.
What is a cause, business or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
My passion for customs and tax law stems from its pivotal role in regulating international trade and ensuring fair taxation systems. These legal fields not only oversee the movement of goods across borders but also ensure that businesses comply with fiscal obligations, contributing to national revenue. They protect domestic industries from unfair competition and promote economic stability. By specialising in this area, I aim to help businesses navigate complex regulations, optimise compliance, and foster a fair and efficient trade environment.
