What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?

A year ago, we successfully streamlined the group structure, a significant project for the legal team that also provided valuable learning opportunities. Over the past year, we have navigated the complexities of AI governance by launching an internal AI governance program and joining the EU AI Pact—demonstrating our commitment to proactively applying the principles of the EU AI Act ahead of its enforcement. These initiatives reflect our ability to adapt to evolving regulations while strengthening the organization’s strategic and legal framework.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

Uncertainty is inherent in the practice of law, and lawyers are naturally equipped to navigate it. Throughout my career, there has rarely been a time without some level of instability—whether driven by market conditions, internal challenges, or broader geopolitical events. While today’s geopolitical landscape presents significant complexities, the approach remains the same: stay calm, focus on what matters, and act decisively.

Resilience comes from maintaining clarity in uncertainty, prioritizing the essential, and finding solutions even in difficult circumstances. I love the Nelson Mandela quote, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

A successful in-house counsel must deeply understand the business and its needs, not just from a legal standpoint but as a true strategic partner. In a multinational company, this includes recognising regional differences and adapting to diverse corporate cultures to provide tailored, effective support. Unlike external counsel, whose role is to offer a purely legal perspective, an in-house counsel must integrate seamlessly within the organization, ensuring legal guidance aligns with business objectives.

What are the key things you prioritise to get the most out of your team?

Communication, trust, and active listening are fundamental. I empower my team by giving them the autonomy to work in ways that bring out their best, while always being available to support and guide when needed. I believe in fostering a collaborative environment where team members feel heard and valued—this not only strengthens our effectiveness but also ensures we stay aligned and proactive in addressing challenges.

Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?

Regulatory complexity continues to grow, but we are now also seeing efforts to streamline certain regulations, particularly in the sustainability area. Agility is more critical than ever—we must quickly adapt while maintaining compliance and a forward-thinking approach. Additionally, embracing technology, especially generative AI, will be essential in optimizing legal processes and decision-making. Understanding and leveraging these tools effectively will be a defining factor for the modern in-house legal function.
