Marc Bergmann is adept at working on major international transactions with partners all over the world, something which has helped him develop good negotiation techniques that have been recognised and utilised by management of all the companies he worked for. ‘Today my profile is one of an international transaction manager, with strong negotiation skills and an IP background that can be critical in the high tech environment’ Bergmann states. Very early in his career he got involved with mergers and acquisitions at SLB and it became his main task within Gemalto upon first joining in 2008. During his time as a general counsel, building ‘team spirit’ for lawyers that were dispersed in different countries and being available for them, team work has been a significant part of his job. In particular he highlights ‘getting them regularly together’ whereby ‘the cross-fertilisation of experience to prepare them to move around the world and use each other’s very varied experiences and practices’. Over the years Bergmann has impressed peers with his ability to deal with complex negotiations in Brazil, revealing his negotiation skills to management and himself, something which made him realise it was a key asset that he could develop, formalise and even teach to his colleagues. Some of these complex transactions include the acquisition of Plaskart, a Turkish company listed on the Istanbul stock market and where he continues to be an active board member, as well as the acquisition of Safenet, Cogent and Biogent biometry business of 3M that transformed the business of Gemalto to become a world leader in e-security. One of his most outstanding negotiations include his current leading role in the completion process of the merger between Thales and Gemalto with a value of around €5bn, during this process Bergmann contributed to worldwide regulatory filings and the overall integration process.
