Alexandre Verrien
Legal director | Dell Technologies
Team size: >10 people across EMEA
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
Our team is hybrid, as we are responsible for a country, France, but also for a dedicated business at a regional level, OEM for EMEA, and responsible for French-speaking countries in the Emerging Africa region. We support all kinds of companies in our region, and we are proud to deliver the same level of legal support for a small company as for a big one listed on the stock market. In general terms, we have supported the transformation of the French State in terms of IT equipment during and following the Covid-19 pandemic. In the last year, we have closed a strategic transaction into the OEM business for driving human progress with AI.
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
From the very beginning, when I joined Dell Technologies almost four years ago, I told my team members that the world is changing, companies are transforming, and we have a legal team and lawyers to transform ourselves and the way we deliver our support. My teams have been working for the last year on a project to build their own ‘law-bots’ with accessible technology made available by Microsoft on MS Teams. Our bot is a virtual legal companion, not replacing a lawyer but helping our internal customers, as well as helping our teams to free up some time in their busy agenda. That is the kind of innovation my teams are working on.
How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?
We at Dell Technologies have a very strong culture code based on principles and values such as innovation, judgment, vision, humility, and integrity. It is essential for us, and me as the person responsible for the law firms working in support of my teams, that these law firms are aligned with our values. I would have no issue replacing a law firm with another one if one law firm is acting against our core values.
Have you used AI in your day-to-day work? If so, how useful do you find it?
We at Dell Technologies are developing products and software with AI, so it is natural for us to implement AI in our day-to-day work at department and individual levels. We are always interested in transforming the way we support our internal and external customers. As described previously, we built from scratch a ‘law-bot’ on Microsoft technology, which includes AI.
