Team size: 90

What are the most significant cases and/or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

SCOR’s legal and compliance department provides day-to-day support and innovative solutions to Group and business functions worldwide in a variety of areas, including compliance, reinsurance and direct insurance, regulation, business and operational structuring, technical and non-technical contracts, IP-IT, data protection, and litigation.

In a globalised environment, the department must ensure that SCOR’s initiatives are implemented appropriately and consistently across the Group and the Business Units. The team also provides the utmost expertise and effective guidance on legal, compliance, and regulatory matters, while keeping in mind the specific interests and needs of its business partners at all times.

Recently, the team has been involved in cross-border restructuring of activities, including support for the setup of new lines of business. We have also supported for major litigation management and settlement. Furthermore, we were involved in the issuance of a new capital contingent program, as well as preparation for DORA compliance in the EU. From a technology perspective, the team played a significant role in the restructuring of intra-group IT services procurement and provision on a global scale, and we also started the digitisation of legal activities, including the implementation of a CML tool and the automation of compliance and legal processes.

How do you see the general counsel role evolving in France over the next five-ten years?

In-house counsel are no longer regarded as mere support functions by their organisations but are, and will increasingly be, consulted from the earliest stages of strategic decisions as full stakeholders in the company’s vision and strategy.

Their ability to anticipate and adapt to increasingly stringent requirements, such as data protection, social and environmental issues, and corporate transparency, as well as to understand and embrace developments and challenges in artificial intelligence and technology, will be essential in driving their organisations forward.

As we enter the next decade, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?

Agility and versatility, as well as an appetite to push the boundaries of their traditional way of working in a fast-changing environment.

What are some of the main legislative or regulatory changes that have impacted you?

Data protection regulations as well as the new rules emerging around the globe on cyber risk and third-party risk management are profoundly changing the landscape and approach of service providers. These changes are making companies more accountable and, as a result, more likely to influence the ecosystem in which they operate.
