The French economy is one of the strongest international performers and it retains a highly advantageous position going into 2017. Its nominal GDP was ranked sixth globally in 2016 by the International Monetary Fund, it is located at the heart of the Eurozone and its economy performs strongly in a number of sectors. Additionally, the May 2017 election of Emmanuel Macron to the French presidency should provide stability to the French economy given his pro-business and pro-Europe agenda, providing a further boost to the country’s blue-chip companies.
In terms of business sectors, France is particularly strong in the energy, automotive and financial industries, as well as chemicals, consumer products, aerospace and defence. On top of this, France is the most popular tourist destination in the world, providing huge income to the service industry. The Legal 500 GC Powerlist: France Teams features in-house legal teams from companies across all these sectors and more, with internationally renowned legal talent from some of the most recognisable and important global businesses and organisations recognised.
The legal teams contained within these pages, and on The Legal 500’s website, all possess excellent legal knowledge as a matter of course – they are all technically gifted and highly trained but this is not necessarily what sets them apart. Rather, it is their ability to utilise their legal knowledge strategically alongside keen business insight to make a positive impact towards their organisation’s success that places them among the top in-house legal counsel in France.
I would like to express my personal thanks to our sponsors for supporting this publication, DS Avocats. A special mention must also be made for in-house lawyers that took time to speak to us throughout the process, and for the research team that worked on this GC Powerlist publication.
David Burgess
Publishing Director
Slow growth in Europe, and particularly the Eurozone, has dominated headlines for so long that one could be forgiven for thinking European businesses have backtracked. France is often singled out as a case study on how low growth, high state expenditure, and heavy regulations have caused businesses to regress. As this Powerlist demonstrates, the reality is quite different.
France is home to some of Europe’s largest and strongest companies, producing goods and services that are in global demand. France is also recognised as a European centre for innovation, with high-growth technology companies which form a booming and visible part of the French economy. Moreover, French businesses are staffed by managers and professional advisers who are widely considered to be amongst the best in the world; French corporate counsels are no exception. To stand out from the crowd in this environment takes a rare combination of technical knowledge, commercial acumen, strategic wisdom, and interpersonal and managerial skills.
DS Avocats is delighted to support the GC Powerlist France Teams 2017 and help recognise the leading teams of France’s internationally-renowned in-house community. A strong and vibrant French economy is key to the future of Europe, and those featured in this list will play an important role to prompt the ‘French Touch’ even further. DS Avocats shares their passion, their thorough knowledge of the various sector specifics, and their excellent advice and innovative approaches to law which enhance the businesses within their strategic growth and reinforcement of their market position. Like the teams featured in this Powerlist, we are constantly reflecting on various improvements of the legal services we provide through efficient methods as well as the role of the attorney within a changing business world.
However, we also believe that legal advice should be provided as simply as possible, without a vision of ‘over-simplification’. The interests of businesses are not served by avoiding the complexities of law. Professional advisers who can contribute to the success of a transaction, a business or a strategic plan without losing sight of the legal complexities that may arise are truly unique. The teams of this Powerlist have all managed to achieve this in their own way. We at DS Avocats share their approach.
We should not limit the professional relationship between law firms and clients to a simple commercial approach, but rather create a long-term relationship based on trust and viability. Sharing the same values as those individuals we represent is key to a collective future profession of the law.
On behalf of all the partners at DS Avocats, I would like to congratulate the teams included in the first GC Powerlist Teams for France.
For the third consecutive year, Legal 500 partnered with Red Legal Iberoamericana to celebrate the very best in-house counsel from across Europe who dedicate their efforts to the vibrant region of Latin America. In fact, these lawyers possess a unique set of skills that enables them to navigate the challenges and diversity of Latin America in an agile and well-versed manner.
The event took place at the Hotel Wellington in the elegant city of Madrid, Spain, on 7th November 2024. Attendees were welcomed by Sara Maggi, senior editor — research and content at Legal 500, who congratulated all the powerlisters for their contributions to business across Latin America and emphasised the importance of recognising such exceptional lawyers.
Julio Veloso, partner at Broseta Abogados, then took the stage. After offering his congratulations, he invited Alejandro Sainz, senior partner at Sainz Abogados, to join him on stage. They reiterated their pride in sponsoring this research and publication, which recognises unmatched talent.
Santiago González Pérez, vice president and senior employment counsel for EMEA at American Express, shared an in-house perspective on the challenges of working in-house and managing client expectations while operating in a business environment. He also highlighted the importance of being recognised by such prestigious publications.
The evening continued with a cocktail reception featuring drinks and canapés, alongside networking opportunities between talented peers. The event was a great success, and we look forward to next year, as we continue to recognise the efforts of Latin American specialists based across Europe.
