About

France-headquartered Engie is a multinational utility company operating in the fields of electricity generation and distribution, natural gas, nuclear and renewable energy. Known as GDF SUEZ until April 2015, the company underwent a rebrand in an effort to expand its footprint internationally. This first step has opened the floodgates for growth into new sectors and markets – creating a large amount of work for the legal team – and the company now has an annual revenue of over €70bn. Led by legal director François Graux, the legal team has already supported a large number of transactions, investments and agreements in 2017 to facilitate continued progress. In March and April 2017, the global team has overseen notable deals in France, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, as well as many others. One such deal occurred when Engie and Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the French company join a group of other European energy suppliers that are providing funding to Gazprom’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline; the five European companies will cover 50% of the €9.5bn cost of the pipeline. Closer to home, also in April, the legal team helped finalise the acquisition of the remaining 41% of wind developer and operator La Compagnie du Vent, helping to solidify Engie’s position as leader in both the wind and solar markets in France. The Engie legal team is in an interesting position in its domestic market concerning the regulatory authority (CRE), which required Engie to cooperate and encourage competition in the sector after previously holding a monopoly. This level of regulatory scrutiny is always expected to be a challenge, and energy prices are a constantly pressing matter for the company, with Engie announcing that it plans to drop gas prices in France by 3.3% in May 2017. In 2016, the Engie legal department was reported to contain approximately 490 lawyers across more than 40 countries – 60 of which work at the headquarters in France. A legal team of this magnitude has proven to be a necessity for a company that is known as the largest independent electricity producer in the world. The flexibility and adaptability of the team has been an important factor in Engie’s success in recent years, and the team contains individuals that have developed their talent to become some of the best lawyers in France. As illustration of the depth of talent within the numerous divisional legal teams, the 2016 GC Powerlist for France included two individuals from the Engie team: Francois-Xavier Olivieri, director legal and regulation – energy management and trading; and Harald Peter Knöbl, general counsel, Engie E&P International.
