An organisation that requires little in the way of introduction, Google continues to expand its business enterprises into new areas. On top of this, the ubiquity of their search engine and the degree to which it impacts everyday life has meant rigorous new regulatory pressures on this core part of their business from governments and other important actors. As such, the work of their legal team, led by Maria Gomri who is head of legal for France, the Middle East (excluding Israel) and North Africa, is varied and it is required to be extremely proactive in dealing with changing objectives. Benjamin du Chaffaut, senior counsel, head of litigation and law enforcement, shines light on what this means, with his sub-team of five lawyers recently ‘dealing with two large cases related to privacy’. Firstly, he explained that the new ‘right to be forgotten’ regulation, whereby certain individuals have been afforded the right to have search results pertaining to them removed from Google’s search pages, has meant the company having to implement ‘an IP block on all related cases within France’. Similarly, du Chaffaut explains that ‘on law enforcement we have to deal with new French statutes on content that promotes and supports extremism, and French authorities now have the right to ask hosting providers to delete searches’. On the back of this, the team is, in collaboration with other in-house business partners, involved in lobbying with government and other bodies to assist in creating a regulatory framework that is both workable and effective. The commercial arm of Google’s legal team in France has also been busy, recently undertaking ‘a high degree of due diligence on YouTube Kids’, an online channel which has been rolled out across Europe over recent months. Through all these projects and more, including the upcoming European launch of the YouTube Red subscription-based streaming service, the team has shown its ability to successfully manage a diverse project portfolio successfully.
