Fashion luxury goods manufacturer Hermès of Paris has for many years been synonymous with France’s leading place in the global fashion industry. From its origins in Thierry Hermès’ harness making shop in 1837, it has grown to become one of the most valuable luxury brands in the world, selling a wide selection of products including the iconic Birkin bag. Hermès generated record profits of over €1bn in 2016, testament to strong governance across the group. The legal team is led by Annick de Chaunac, who has served as Hermès’ legal director since 1996 and also chairs the legal committee of the French Federation of Fashion and of Ready-to-Wear Couturiers and Fashion Designers. She is assisted by deputy general counsel Nicolas Martin in coordinating a network of lawyers in France and abroad. The team is composed of a number of experts in their fields involved in everything from dealing with the company’s suppliers, monitoring and responding to legal and regulatory change, supporting the various divisions of the company, protecting its IP, dealing with counterfeit goods and litigating on behalf of the company. The team also provides training on legal matters to Hermès’ operational staff.
