About

With total revenues of almost €25bn, Paris-headquartered Schneider Electric is a key player in the global energy servicing and management sector. In 2016, the company’s technological development and investment in R&D meant that it had over 20,000 patents worldwide to manage, some it owns, some it has filed for and some in portfolios. The level of IP work associated with such a large portfolio is indicative of the quality of the in-house legal team, as is the number of high-value acquisitions that Schneider has completed in the recent years. Peter Wexler, general counsel of Schneider Electric, is a well-known figure in the global legal industry and in addition to his impressive career, Wexler is always the first to point out the huge value of his high-quality legal team. The importance placed on the training and continued collaboration throughout the global team of almost 300 lawyers is highly impressive. This investment and desire to develop talent has been disseminated across Schneider Electric during a period of quick expansion for the company and its legal team – it is clear that the culture within the department is one of success, motivational support and collaboration with business peers. Wexler is based in the United States, but travels frequently to France to meet with the team there; in fact the entire global management team is geographically spread and the global workforce of Schneider Electric is counted as over 140,000, so communication is another fundamental pillar of the success of the legal team. The French part of the legal department is directly overseen by Sébastien Niogret, chief legal counsel France, who featured in 2016 edition of the GC Powerlist. Niogret is known for his ‘pragmatic, flexible and responsive approach’, and has been a key part of the team’s continued success in France.
