Experienced European patent lawyer Dr Jörg Dreyhsig, is the vice president for patents for medical instruments company Fresenius, which has a turnover of $14bn and employs 86,000 people. Dr Dreyhsig focuses on the areas of registration, defence and IP enforcement, including the defence against lawsuits brought by third parties regarding alleged infringements. Over the years Dr Dreyhsig has overseen Fresenius’ development from a large mid-cap company into a world leader in its field and a DAX30 listed business, demanding a continuous adjustment in terms of patent work. As a patent expert, Dr Dreyhsig leads the international patent prosecution unit and patent litigation, additionally handling all licence negotiations with a high level of professionalism. Due to this high level of professionalism, one of his major achievements is that a wide range of matters are now being handled by the in-house legal function. As well as his day-to-day role, Dr Dreyhsig also takes care of the duties related to the national employee inventor’s Acts, competitor IP, monitoring and analysis. Leading the litigation and opposition areas has made him responsible of defining and coordinating the global IP enforcement, defence strategies and actions guiding the global patent prosecution policy of the company. Career highlights have been the enforcement of nullity or substantial limitation to numerous European IP rights of competitors, while at the same time claiming that ‘the proprietary protection of our own products has been significantly increased over the years’.
