Dr Martin Schwarz was appointed senior corporate vice president and general counsel at Boehringer Ingelheim (BI), one of the world’s leading pharmaceuticals companies and the only family-owned company among the world’s top-20 pharmaceutical entities, in 2015. He now oversees around 250 lawyers globally, including 50 German-based legal staff, and serves on various committees within the company and on a number of prominent industry associations. Dr Schwarz began his career at the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, working at its Brussels and Cologne offices as antitrust, litigation and investigations and M&A lawyer, before joining BI two years later in 2005. Prior to taking charge of BI’s global legal and compliance function, Dr Schwarz held a number of positions within BI, including senior counsel for licensing law and antitrust, head of corporate litigation and governmental investigations and head of corporate legal M&A and strategic transactions, in which role he oversaw the sale of BI’s Roxane business to Hikma Pharmaceuticals in a $2.65bn cash and stock deal.
