With record revenues of €6.4bn in 2016, the B. Braun Group is in fantastic shape going into the future. This state of affairs is due in no small part to the excellent work of the company’s in-house lawyers including general counsel Dr Volker Daum. Having been with the company since 2009, Dr Daum has a number of career highlights, including working on the acquisition of an over 25% stake in Rhön Klinikum and the transformation of the corporate profile of B. Braun Group company Aesculap. However, he claims that it is perhaps the use of digital services to provide ‘new technology-oriented workflows with agile methods’ that have had the most lasting effect on his legal department’s capabilities. Dr Daum is a keen exponent of the advantages that cutting edge technology can provide to multiply the ability of the legal team both collectively and individually. As well as these ‘optimisation of processes’ within the team, he has also introduced software relating to specific legal matters and patent issues, which allow the team to deal with many of its day to day challenges more effectively. Dr Daum also enjoys ‘very close cooperation’ with senior management of the company and reports directly to the CEO. This, along with his collaborative nature and willingness to innovate at all times, marks him out as an exceptional general counsel who looks set to continue the B. Braun Group’s recent success.
