Matthias is head of legal Continental Europe with PGIM Real Estate. He and his team are overseeing the operations in PGIM Real Estate’s offices in Frankfurt, München, Luxembourg, Paris and Milan.
PGIM Real Estate is the real estate investment business of PGIM, the global asset management business of Prudential Financial. Our business leverages a 50-year legacy of investing in commercial real estate, a 140-year history of real estate financing, and the deep local expertise of professionals in 32 cities globally. PGIM Real Estate ranks among the top real estate investment managers in the world.
As of December 31, 2021, the organisation has over USD$209.3bn gross assets under management and administration (USD$184bn net) across real estate debt, equity and securities, including USD$45.9bn in AUA and net AUM of USD$138.0bn.
Matthias has over 20 years of experience in the real estate sector, first in private practice (former partner with Mayer Brown) and since 2013 with PGIM Real Estate.
His latest achievement had been integrating the regulatory aspects of ESG (for example, SFDR and EU-taxonomy) into PGIM Real Estate’s business model which does not only affect EU based AIFs, but does (partially) have a global reach as well. Given that the regulation is still very much developing, the implementation is challenging and requires a continuous collaboration with the business to align PGIM’s ESG strategy to the changing regulatory requirements.
On the real estate transactional side, PGIM’s in-house team is supporting an annual transaction volume of several billion euros each year, which includes a significant amount of work on joint venture structures with local partners.
Being very tech savvy, Matthias tends to also focus on the legal tech opportunities in the market. He successfully implemented various tools to achieve higher levels of efficiency within the in-house legal department, including tools for document analytics and mark-up, e-billing and document production.
In the area of regulation of financial services, Matthias’s responsibilities include maintaining and expanding AIFM/MiFID 2 licenses of PGIM Real Estate’s operating entities in the EU, in particular in relation to the PGIM’s Luxembourg based asset manager.
Since he joined PGIM Real Estate, Matthias has focused on gender equality in the legal business, mainly by entertaining initiatives with outside counsel to increase the number of female partners and female leaders in the legal industry. The latest development is an external mentoring program for female senior associates on their way to partnership.
Matthias is member of the legal committee of BVI (Bundesverband Investment und Asset Management), of the advisory board of Bundesverband Wirtschaftskanzleien in Deutschland and Fachbeirat Anwaltsspiegel.
