Having witnessed many crises over the last two decades, my personal experience has been to take an even more proactive role as General Counsel, guiding management colleagues (and the entire organisation) through difficult times so they can continue to focus on the business. How this looks in practice depends on the nature of the crisis itself, and it can range from being a member of a task force, providing additional tools or legal training/coaching, to taking on a project lead role. Often, each crisis presents opportunities, and we also help identify and evaluate them. Our short-, mid-, and long-term legal strategies are always designed as part of the broader business strategy. By anticipating possible risks and opportunities (and their practical consequences), we help the organisation prepare for the scenarios that may arise during each crisis, ensuring resilience. This naturally aligns with the risk management system, which is overseen by our finance department.

In a nutshell, the more turbulent the times, the calmer and more focused the General Counsel must be in order to proactively develop solutions and lead everyone involved along the agreed path out of the crisis.
