How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

As the Director of Legal and Company Secretary at Seplat Energy, I take a multifaceted approach to ensuring a comprehensive response during periods of instability or crises. At the core of this approach are foresight and strategy, ensuring that the legal team is proactive in identifying potential issues while remaining adaptable as challenges unfold.

During times of instability, my first step is to establish a robust crisis management plan with clear mitigation actions and designated action parties, forming the crisis management team. This team conducts a thorough risk assessment to identify potential legal exposures and liabilities. Insights from these assessments inform a prioritised action plan that swiftly addresses critical legal issues while maintaining operational continuity.

Communication is a crucial component of this strategy. All stakeholders (including investors, the board, management, employees, government, and partners) must be regularly informed and assured of the status of the crisis and the progress of mitigation actions. Transparent and consistent communication helps maintain confidence and align efforts toward corporate resilience.

Collaboration is equally important. The legal strategy cannot succeed in isolation, so I ensure it is closely aligned with the company’s overarching business objectives, as formulated by a cross-functional leadership team. For example, when managing regulatory changes or compliance issues, we work closely with the operations and sustainability teams to develop solutions that meet legal requirements while supporting sustainability goals.

Agility is critical in navigating crises. I encourage flexibility in executing legal strategies, allowing my team to pivot quickly in response to changing circumstances. By closely monitoring the crisis landscape, we can anticipate risks and adapt strategies accordingly.

Finally, post-mortems play a key role in strengthening resilience. Once a crisis is resolved, the leadership team conducts structured reviews to extract lessons learned. These insights are then translated into formal improvements to business practices and policies and cascaded across the organisation.

Ultimately, my objective is not just to help Seplat Energy withstand crises but to emerge stronger. By aligning legal strategy with Seplat Energy’s vision of being Nigeria’s leading energy provider, I contribute to positioning the company for long-term success, ensuring it remains resilient in an evolving landscape.

In your opinion, what are the main trends that are salient in your country currently (these can be legal, political, economy or business-based)?

Some of the main trends shaping Nigeria today span legal, political, economic, and business landscapes, influencing corporate strategies and governance.

Energy Transition and Sustainability have become key priorities, with Nigeria aligning more closely with global climate commitments such as the Paris Agreement. There is increasing focus on reducing dependence on oil and eliminating gas flaring. Energy companies, including Seplat Energy, are diversifying their portfolios to support both global and national sustainability goals while adapting to evolving investor expectations and regulatory requirements.

Regulatory Reforms are reshaping Nigeria’s business environment, particularly in the oil and gas sector with the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 (PIA). The Act seeks to improve transparency, streamline regulations, and attract investment into the sector. Additionally, tax reforms and business-friendly regulations are being introduced to create a more structured and investor-friendly economy.

Digital Transformation and Technological Innovation are advancing rapidly, driven by Nigeria’s young and tech-savvy population. The fintech sector continues to expand, attracting significant foreign investment and increasing financial inclusion. The government is also leveraging digital technology to enhance governance and service delivery. Artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of traditional business processes and daily activities, promoting efficiency and global connectivity.

Diversity and Inclusion remain a growing focus, both from a regulatory and corporate perspective. There is heightened scrutiny on gender parity in leadership, with regulators, investors, and stakeholders using it as a key performance indicator for compliance and investment decisions. More women are rising to executive leadership, board positions, and political offices. A landmark moment in Nigeria’s judiciary is the appointment of Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun in 2024, making her the second woman to serve as Chief Justice of Nigeria since Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar in 2012.

These trends present both opportunities and challenges for businesses operating in Nigeria and potential foreign investors. As a leader in the legal function at Seplat Energy, staying attuned to these developments is crucial for navigating legal complexities and positioning the company for long-term success in Nigeria’s evolving landscape.

Are there any causes, business or otherwise, you are passionate about?

I am driven by several causes that align my professional commitments with my personal passions. One of my foremost priorities is promoting strong corporate governance within the energy sector. Given that Seplat Energy is listed on both the Nigerian and London Stock Exchanges, maintaining the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct is essential. Effective governance not only attracts investors and strengthens market confidence but also ensures that we operate responsibly and sustainably within our communities.

As the Board-appointed Gender Diversity Champion at Seplat Energy, I am deeply committed to advancing gender diversity and inclusion. I believe diversity is not just about compliance or reputation—it is a key driver of innovation, fresh perspectives, and overall business success. I actively advocate for policies that support the recruitment, retention, and promotion of women at all levels of the organisation. This includes mentorship programs, flexible work arrangements, and unconscious bias training to foster an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. These initiatives are implemented through Seplat Women’s Awesome Network (SWAN), which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN-SDG) 5 on gender equality.

Mentoring is another cause I am passionate about. Throughout my career, I have witnessed the transformative impact of mentorship, and as someone who has benefited greatly from it, I am dedicated to paying it forward. My approach to mentorship goes beyond guidance—I strive to help mentees navigate challenges, set goals, and make informed career decisions. I firmly believe that empowering individuals through mentorship creates a ripple effect, strengthening the workforce and building resilience.

My passions are deeply intertwined with my professional role and personal values. Whether promoting gender diversity, mentoring future leaders, or driving corporate governance and sustainability, I am committed to making a meaningful impact both within my organisation and in the broader society.
