How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organization’s resilience?

As in-house lawyers for MTN Nigeria, our mission is to protect the business from risks while enabling it to achieve its objectives. One of the most critical factors in risk management is proactivity, so we constantly ensure that we cover all grounds. This way, when any risk arises, we take the most appropriate course of action to defend and protect the entity. We achieve this through scenario planning. Although it is difficult to anticipate every possible risk, we try to cover the most critical factors based on the exigencies of our business. This ensures that we are not caught off guard by any event, allowing us to be responsive rather than reactive.

In your opinion, what are the main trends affecting your work now (these can be legal, political, economic, or business-based)?

The issue of multiple regulations, whereby several regulatory agencies actively issue regulations and guidelines on the same subject, sometimes conflicting.

Inflation and other economic headwinds.

The slow pace of case resolution in courts, which results in a significant litigation portfolio for many corporate entities.
