Which recent political, economic, or regulatory changes have impacted the company and the team the most?

Hellas Gold is the Greek subsidiary of Eldorado Gold, a Canadian gold mining company listed in the stock exchange of Toronto and New York. Hellas Gold owns the Kassandra Mines as well as the following ones: Skouries, Olympias and Stratoni/Mavres Petres mines. We are also the owner of gold, cooper, silver, lead, and zinc mines in Chalkidiki peninsula in the northern Greece. Building on a legacy that dates from antiquity, Hellas Gold is implementing one of the largest foreign investments in Greece, valued at approximately $1.5bn, potentially employing more than 1,500 people.

In 2021, Hellas Gold signed an investment agreement with the Greek government. Providing a modernised legal and financial framework for the further development, construction, and operation of the Kassandra Mines, the agreement gave investors protection mechanisms, permitting framework similar to other large-scale foreign investment agreements in Greece.

In what ways do you see the in-house legal role evolving in your region over the next few years?

Our legal team operates within a concrete support mechanism; we provide in-house legal services where the legal function is seen as a true business partner for the company’s operations. The pandemic crisis and the move to remote working introduced more flexibility at work by using IT tools.

How has the increasing consciousness of climate change and sustainability affected the company and the team’s priorities?

As part of the Eldorado Gold Group, Hellas Gold has implements SIMS (Sustainability Integrated Management System) in every part of its operation. SIMS incorporates General, Occupational H&S, Environmental, Social Performance and Security Standards. Our employees and workers are trained to implement SIMS.
