Since 2011, Independent Power Transmission Operator (known as IPTO or ADMIE) has assumed the role of transmission system operator for the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System, ensuring Greece’s electricity supply in an efficient and reliable manner.
Michael Chatzikyriakou has been head of the organisation’s legal department from the outset, and explains that he had a major role to play in the establishment of the company and its splitting from parent company Power Public Corporation (PPC): ‘In 2011, I was actively involved in the project of the legal and functional unbundling of the system transmission activities from PPC, a vertically integrated undertaking active in the energy production and supply markets, in compliance with the requirements of EU Directive 2009/72/EC.
After the spin-off of the above mentioned activities, a company under the name Independent Power Transmission Operator was established’. Since then, he has continued the streamlining of the company’s operations and its move away from PPC. ‘In 2015’, he explains, ‘I was involved in the full ownership unbundling of IPTO from its former parent company PPC and the transition from the Independent Transmission Operator model to the full ownership unbundling model’.
With vast experience in the energy sector accumulated since 1992, Chatzikyriakou’s expertise is highly respected by contemporaries. In addition to his professional work he is a member of the Greek Association for Energy Law.
