My role as chief legal, regulatory and compliance officer is pivotal in navigating the complex legal and regulatory landscape within which the company operates. Ensuring compliance with the stringent legal framework and aligning the legal strategy to facilitate business operations, such as drafting proposals for the regulation of products and features, is crucial for the company’s success and sustainability. My efforts in shaping the company’s strategy, particularly in a highly regulated industry like gaming, are essential for maintaining the company’s reputation and its ability to operate effectively. The legal department’s work in ensuring that all products and features comply with the necessary regulations not only protects the company from potential legal challenges but also supports its growth and innovation.
My role has been instrumental in guiding the company through various challenges. My proactive approach during the Covid period, particularly in enhancing the online business through the issuance of new regulations and activating arbitration clauses, was crucial in safeguarding the company’s resilience. Additionally, negotiations for the renewal of exclusive rights, such as the recent signing of the concession agreement with the Republic of Cyprus, demonstrate my commitment to protecting the company’s interests and ensuring its continued success.
Finally, at the forefront of Compliance, the issuance of proper Compliance policies is fundamentally important for OPAP to ensure its corporate governance. legal considerations and risks are integrated into the crisis management plan in the fit and proper policy, indicating a proactive approach to managing legal risks. In conclusion, a comprehensive legal strategy during crises involves preparation, understanding the legal landscape, and aligning legal actions with the company’s overall business strategy. It is about being proactive, adaptable, and collaborative to ensure the organisation’s resilience and stability.
What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?
Digital innovation and AI are at the forefront of legal services delivery and have already had a tremendous impact on the legal profession. In our legal department, we have incorporated AI using Microsoft Copilot and cloud services delivery, as well as a legal interface with a content management system that meets my team’s needs for information, content, and document management. This has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of our daily operations.
I have kept up to date with these developments through regular communication and collaboration with our company’s IT team and IT service providers, as well as by attending conferences related to AI and new technologies.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
