Operating in over 30 locations and jurisdictions means that OSM Maritime Group’s legal function is required to keep track of a highly complex workload in support of a truly global business. As such, the legal team has expanded to include a new legal counsel based in Singapore, and includes a dedicated GDPR expert, a data protection officer and a tax manager attached to the team in order to maximise its compliance and risk management abilities. Senior legal counsel Georgia Demetriou spoke very highly of the team’s work in recent months in the face of exponential growth in day-to-day activity, stating that ‘the legal team is on top of all legal matters of an evolving, reputable and international organisation which is always on to ensure the client’s needs and expectations’. Of the teams work, Demetriou spoke to the key role the team has played in ‘the planning and implementation process, as well as due diligence of the acquisition of a minority stake in OSM Maritime Group by Oaktree Capital Management. In addition to that, the legal team was able at all times to identify and mitigate all legal risks in the organisation’s agreements while staying compliant with all national and international rules and regulations’. Demetriou referred to a unique team spirit within the legal team of OSM, and emphasised that ‘what defines us as a legal team is our commitment to each and every contract we take on, and our ability to make these contracts successful through our breadth of services and capabilities’. Of the team’s internal culture, Demetriou was clear that it is a major consideration for team members, to uphold an ethical approach at all times: ‘The values are at the core of OSM Maritime Group, and are a key element of legal’s team culture and ethos.
