Unilever’s legal department is a small and agile team, comprising of three lawyers, Christina Vasilopoulou, who is general counsel, Kalliopi Georganda and Alexandra Moussatou. The territorial responsibility of the legal team goes beyond Greek borders and extends to a region of five different countries: Greece, Cyprus, Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia, collectively called South Eastern Europe (SEE). In parallel, Unilever is active in different channels of retail, traditional, e-commerce and professional sectors, with various product categories in home care, beauty and personal care, foods and refreshments and other fast moving consumer goods. The legal team provides legal support across channels, categories and territories to enable business growth while ensuring efficiency of operations across a multi country organisation and strategic counsel on major issues and transactions throughout the SEE region. As a nominator identifies, ‘the team’s key thrusts are: [Firstly] to inspire trust amongst the employees and towards the leadership by enabling Unilever to act with confidence, living its values while building a performance culture. Therefore, we have a collaborative mindset, we listen and understand, we are part of the business, not just an advisor. [Secondly] to champion growth by focusing on strategic value add work, acting with speed and agility, supporting the business to win through new business models, channels, digital transformation and portfolio changes, using new and innovative legal solutions and being enablers, not blockers. We are solution orientated, by putting our focus on how to achieve outcomes and we prioritise to maximise business impact. [Thirdly] to lead for change, by transforming ourselves and the way we work through innovative initiatives’. The team is highly skilled and outward looking for innovation and trends it can incorporate into the department. The team navigates complex matters and distills them to workable solutions having a major impact, because it is not only a partner in the business, it is instrumental to Unilever’s success. In the words of a nominator, ‘[they] constantly challenge ourselves to play a leading role and create real impact, every day’.
