Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally friendly activities?
In five of the last six years, The LEGO Group has received scores that place the company in the leadership bracket for companies reporting sustainability actions by the CDP, the global environmental disclosure nonprofit charity that runs the disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states, and regions to manage their environmental impacts. The work we do to run an increasingly sustainable business is divided into three cross-organisational impact areas: Children, Environment, and People.
The Children area is split between two workstreams. ‘Learning through Play,’ which includes our efforts to give more children the ability to learn and develop through play, and ‘Responsible Engagement with Children,’ which includes our efforts to promote children’s rights, safety, and wellbeing.
The Environment area is split between ‘Climate Action,’ which includes our efforts to reduce CO2 impact and resource use, and ‘Circular Economy,’ which includes efforts to innovate in materials and packaging, keeping LEGO products in play and moving towards more circular business models.
The People area is also split between two workstreams. ‘Responsible Sourcing,’ which includes our efforts to build supplier capabilities and monitor and mitigate supply chain risks, and ‘Responsible Workplace,’ which covers our work to create an inclusive, safe, and family-friendly workplace.
Likewise, the legal department of The LEGO Group is key to achieving the company’s sustainability goals, and the Intellectual Property team has significantly contributed to these objectives by recycling the waste of counterfeit products that infringe our IP rights.
In this regard, I have been involved in several sustainability projects aimed at introducing new products to the market using materials from destroyed counterfeit sets. The new products we have created from waste in the South America region include roof tiles and basketball boards, which are later donated to public schools and sports centres for children. Additionally, in Mexico, we have created Christmas ball ornaments donated to people in need in the country. This aligns with the LEGO Group’s planet promise to play our part in building a sustainable future and to have a positive impact on society and the planet while we enforce our intellectual property rights.
