Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally friendly activities?
Bupa is fully committed to protecting the environment. That is why we recently updated our company purpose to helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives and making a better world. To bring this purpose to life, Bupa has launched a number of initiatives.
For example, Mission Zero. As part of our sustainability strategy, we have set our ambition to be a net-zero business by 2040 for our global healthcare operations. In Bupa Mexico alone, between 2023 and 2024, we will reduce our CO2 emissions by 470 tons.
Secondly, we have ‘Eco-Disruptive.’ This is our global talent and innovation program in which Bupa employees, entrepreneurs, and startups come together to tackle sustainability challenges within our business and the health sector. Our goal is to find and support scalable startups where we can add value to their sustainability solutions.
And Mission Regenerate. With our Healthy Cities program, we encourage people to adopt healthy, long-term habits in their day-to-day lives while preserving and regenerating green spaces. By completing activities like walking 6,000 steps a day and challenges set via the Healthy Cities app, participants can unlock investment from Bupa into the restoration of the environment in urban areas.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?
In-house lawyers have a unique opportunity to influence their companies to become more sustainable by taking specific actions in their day-to-day activities. For example, a legal team may drive an organisation to become paperless by implementing electronic signatures on contracts and corporate documents in general.
Additionally, legal teams are at the front and centre of interactions with governmental bodies and can therefore build transparent and ethical relationships based on internal policies, training, and example.
Last but not least, legal teams can impact the communities in which the company does business by promoting fair and clear business relationships through reader-friendly contracts, a comprehensive litigation policy, and providing training to employees on matters such as conflict of interest and anti-bribery.
