Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally friendly activities?
As a fund manager and investors, we are really aware of the influence we can have in our portfolio companies in many matters, which is the reason we can leverage the way in which we introduce and make enforceable certain actions regarding renewability, sustainability, and other environmentally friendly activities. It is important to always take into the account that such activities are applicable to the different kind of companies and industries we have in our portfolio and ensuring that the companies are able of complying with our requirements and recommendations and especially that they have reasonable time and capability to doing so.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organisations?
We are constantly updated into what are the latest amendments and latest trends on matters as important and changeable as environment, social and governance. We can also lead efforts that can go beyond what is legally or regulatory mandated to our organisations and push forward to create innovating and one-step ahead processes and auto-regulation that may be differentiators among other organisations like ours.
It can be challenging to measure a company’s track record in environmentally friendly behaviour. What, in your opinion, has mostly been missed in discussions about how green a company is?
I truly believe that we need a mix between having a uniformed methodology to measure efforts regarding environmental behaviours, but also being able to customise the requirements asked for organisations depending on their industry, size, stage, and capability of understanding, creating, and implementing improvements internally that could really make an impact and not just check a generalised list.
