Can you discuss your or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability, or other environmentally-friendly activities?
Discussing my collaborations at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Financial Services (HPEFS) immediately brings the word ‘sustainability’ to mind, as I take great pride in being part of a company that seeks global significance and impact from a green perspective. HPE/HPEFS is currently focused on achieving ambitious climate targets, including reaching net-zero emissions across the entire value chain by 2040, a 70% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from 2020 to 2030, and a 42% reduction in Scope 3 emissions from 2020 to 2030. HPE/HPEFS is one of the first companies to set Science Based Targets initiative-approved greenhouse gas reduction targets across our value chain, aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C trajectory.
Our path to net-zero is well-founded in various strategies, from partnering with customers, suppliers, and providers to advance climate roadmaps, to supporting policies and coalitions that accelerate clean energy markets. We are also focused on building infrastructure across the value chain to measure and track performance, while transforming our offerings and business models to reduce the impacts of our solutions and decouple business growth from emissions. Just this year, HPE was named on the Corporate Knights and As You Sow Clean200 list, highlighting publicly traded companies that are leading the sustainable clean energy economy. We were also listed on the Sustainalytics’ 2025 ESG Top-Rated Companies List, recognising top-performing companies based on ESG Risk Rating scores. HPE/HPEFS is ranked as a top-rated company and recognised among the top 100 Technology Hardware companies.
Why are in-house lawyers well-placed to drive change in their organizations?
It is complex to answer this question briefly, so I would like to focus on three main aspects: in-house lawyers in cross-functional collaboration, in-house lawyers as advocates for change, and in-house lawyers promoting a culture of ethics. Discussing a company without including interdepartmental collaboration would be impossible. As a legal department, we are required to collaborate with all business units that shape the company while advocating for both compliance with local laws and internal policies. As advocates for change, we can shine a light on innovation by providing both practical and complex solutions, always finding room for improvement and efficiency. Finally, we have the responsibility, and the inner conviction, to promote ethical conduct within the company while encouraging our peers to align our legal advice with the broader business strategy.
It can be challenging to measure a company’s track record in environmentally friendly behavior. What, in your opinion, has mostly been missed in discussions about how green a company is?
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges affecting our world today. Transitioning to a low-carbon economy is easier said than done when attempting to conduct business in a manner that delivers leading environmental, health, and safety performances while helping to minimize negative impacts on the planet. Companies need to align their external reporting with the recommendations set forth by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures to better understand the environmental and financial opportunities of either creating or enhancing climate strategies, and how resilient these strategies are over the short, medium, and long term.
